One of the most dynamic and exciting world-class ensembles of its generation, The Borealis String Quartet has received international critical acclaim as an ensemble praised for its fiery performances, passionate style, and refined, musical interpretation. Founded in Vancouver, British Columbia in the fall of 2000 and rapidly establishing a stellar reputation, the Borealis has toured extensively in North America Europe and Asia and performed to enthusiastic sold-out audiences in major cities, including New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Rome, Mainz, Shanghai, Taipei, Beijing, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and, of course, in their home town of Vancouver.

The Borealis has continued to receive awards and rave accolades from presenters, renowned musicians and critics alike for their artistry. The Borealis was the only classical group to be selected for the Great Canadian Dream Competition which was televised across the nation and as a result, were the only classical musicians to perform for the Prime Minister of Canada at the Parliament Hill in Ottawa for an audience of over 75,000.

Since then, they have performed on every music series in Canada. Amongst other awards, their most recent CD was also nominated for the prestigious Golden Melody Award in Asia.

As international prize winners, including the Dranoff International Two Piano Competition and Provincia di Caltanisetta International Chamber Music Competition, they have performed in recital and with orchestras North America and Europe including several appearances at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. In a performance at the Salkind Duo Piano Festival, the Bergmann Duo “opened with a lush reading of the Ravel reductions of Nuages and Fetes from the orchestral Nocturnes by Debussy. Rich with colors and textures, the glorious scene was presented with attention to the most minute and delicate details of the work.” (The San Francisco Classical Voice) Recognized in the press as “piano duo extraordinaire having keyboard skills of the first order with impeccable musicianship” (The Calgary Herald) they have recorded numerous CDs for the Arktos, Koch International, Brilliant Classics and Naxos labels. Their Naxos release of the 2 piano music of William Bolcom reviewed in BBC music magazine contains “delicious take-offs of Latin –American salon music, plus ragtime and cakewalk pieces”.

Their programmes draw from an extensive repertoire ranging from the baroque to the contemporary and incorporate numerous arrangements and original compositions by Marcel Bergmann who writes in a “uniquely original voice that straddles the best of the classical and jazz worlds”(The Miami Herald)

In addition to their performing careers, they enjoy teaching, act as Directors at the Langley Community Music School and serve as lecturers and jury members of International competitions. The duo were recently named Artistic Directors of White Rock Concerts.
