SUMMARY:Tom Lavin and the Legendary Powder Blues
DESCRIPTION:Mur-Man Productions presents \nGeneral tickets are on sale on Thursday\, June 27 at 10am PST. \nFor over four decades Powder Blues has been Canada’s leading blues band. The mix of swing\, blues\, jazz\, rock & roll and r & b has an appeal so wide that people from seven to seventy swing side by side at a Powder Blues concert. Over the years the band has toured non-stop through Canada\, the United States and overseas\, spreading feel-good music that makes folks dance and shout. \nPowder Blues debut album\, ‘Uncut’\, was ignored by major labels who said there was ‘no market for the blues’. Undiscouraged\, the band sold it off stage and sent it to radio stations whose switchboards lit up with calls asking\, ‘who’s that?’ After selling 30\,000 copies in a few weeks\, the same record labels competed to distribute this ‘non-commercial’ product. To date Powder Blues have sold over a million records worldwide. \nBand highlights include winning Canada’s Juno\, headlining the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland\, winning the Blues Foundation Award in Memphis\, Tennessee and touring the US and Europe with legends like Willie Dixon\, John Lee Hooker\, B.B. King\, James Brown\, Albert Collins\, James Cotton and Stevie Ray Vaughn. \n\nLeader\, Tom Lavin has written many of the band’s best-known songs including ‘Doin’ It Right’ (‘On the Wrong Side of Town’) and ‘Boppin With the Blues’. Born in Chicago where he worked with local bands and blues legends\, Tom moved to Vancouver gigging in the downtown nightclub scene. This led to work as studio musician\, song writer\, band leader\, record producer and film composer. \nTom has won BCMIA awards for ‘Guitarist\, Singer\, Songwriter and Producer of the Year’\, a Juno award for ‘Best New Band’ and the American W.C. Handy award. He has over a dozen gold\, and platinum records for Powder Blues\, Prism\, April Wine\, Long John Baldry\, Amos Garrett\, and many others. 2025 is the band’s 47th anniversary. Their more than a dozen CD titles and DVD continue to sell world-wide making Tom Lavin & the Legendary Powder Blues one of Canada’s longest-standing musical ambassadors.

SUMMARY:Vancouver Horror Show Film Festival 2025
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2018\, The Vancouver Horror Show Film Festival (VHS) mission celebrates great cinematic storytelling in the horror genre\, and to support the filmmakers and screenwriters who tell those stories. \nVHS is devoted to finding selected works — feature films\, short films and screenplays alike — that contain elevated narratives that challenge archaic ideas about what the horror genre might have traditionally encompassed. The VHS is committed to fostering the growth of student (or emerging) filmmakers early in their careers\, supporting them as they develop their craft and connecting them to a broader filmmaking community. The VHS is interested in horror that moves the needle forward in terms of messaging\, inclusivity\, representation and thoughtful narrative. \nThis year’s film festival includes 9 short horror films and runs 2 hours with an intermission break. Recommended for 14+ (parental discretion is advised). Content warning: frightening scenes\, suspense\, mature themes.

SUMMARY:Guy Davis
DESCRIPTION:Student/Child $15 \n\nTwo-time\, back-to-back Grammy nominee for Best Traditional Blues\, a musician\, Actor\, Author\, and Songwriter\, Guy Davis performs an intimate concert at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre this October! Guy uses a blend of Roots\, Blues\, Folk\, Rock\, Rap\, Spoken Word\, and World Music to comment on\, and address the frustrations of social injustice\, touching on historical events\, and common life struggles. \nHis performances feature a mix of his original songs and cover songs by Muddy Waters\, Howlin Wolf\, Pete Seeger\, Bob Dylan\, Mance Lipscombe\, Blind Willie McTell\, Leadbelly\, Blind Lemon Jefferson\, and many others. His admiration for antiquities parallels his love of music\, “I like antiques and old things\, old places\, that still have the dust of those who’ve gone before us lying upon them.” Blowing that dust off just enough to see its beauty is something Guy has excelled at for over twenty-five years of songwriting and performing. like savoring the ghosts of old sounds while still enjoying modern music. He is a songwriter greatly influenced by his love of theater and storytelling\, who derives joy from touring and seeing people from all walks of life.  His hope is to bring people together\, with the commonality that we are all people regardless of class\, race\, or personal experience\, a lesson he learned from his long time friendship with Pete Seeger.
