SUMMARY:All Our Relations: Portraits from the Elder's Gathering Walk & Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join Craig Richards for a tour of this spectacular collection and hear the stories behind the portraits. The Walk & Talk will run for approximately two hours in the Art Gallery on the 3rd floor (CPAC lobby). \nFor the past 19 years\, Indigenous Elders have gathered in the shadow of Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain\, near the banks of the Bow River\, in Banff National Park.  Elders\, from First Nations and Métis communities on both sides of the Rocky Mountains\, come from seven major language groups\, from families with stories told through the generations of using and sharing this valley\, the rivers\, mountains\, buffalo\, and salmon. The Elders meet\, family stories are shared\, traditional medicines are exchanged. The gatherings provide hope and direction for restoring culture\, language\, and community health\, now and into the future. \nOver the years\, youth have been invited to participate and have brought additional perspectives to the conversations. This has also been an opportunity for the Elders to pass on their knowledge. These gatherings have become a spiritual experience that bonds participants and unifies their voice as brothers and sisters.

SUMMARY:The Met Opera: CARMEN
DESCRIPTION:Senior $22 \n\nNOTE this screening of Carmen is rescheduled from March 12 to June 11 at a discounted rate due to the technical issue experienced in March. We thank all our Met Opera patrons for their patience and understanding and would like to offer this screening at a discounted rate. \nSpend your Tuesday mornings enjoying award-winning performances from the Metropolitan Opera\, broadcast in HD from New York City. \nA vital new production of one of opera’s most enduringly powerful works! Acclaimed English director Carrie Cracknell makes her Met debut\, reinvigorating the classic story with a staging that moves the action to the modern day and finds at the heart of the drama issues that could not be more relevant today: gendered violence\, abusive labor structures\, and the desire to break through societal boundaries. Dazzling young mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina leads a powerhouse quartet of stars in the complex and volatile title role\, alongside tenor Piotr Beczała as Carmen’s troubled lover Don José\, soprano Angel Blue as the loyal Micaëla\, and bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen as the swaggering Escamillo. Daniele Rustioni conducts Bizet’s heart-pounding score.

SUMMARY:Reel Alternatives: The Great Escaper
DESCRIPTION:The Cowichan Hospice Society presents \nSubscribe to all 5 shows for $70! Single tickets on sale February 1\, 2024. \n\nIn the summer of 2014 — the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings — octogenarian Bernie Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He’d staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy\, commemorating their fallen comrades. It was a story that captured the imagination of the world — Bernie seemed to embody the defiant\, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But of course\, it wasn’t the whole story. It was the story we all tell ourselves to make war and old age bearable. The bitter-sweet script explores the reality with wit and a very big heart. Bernie’s adventure\, spanning a mere 48 hours\, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Irene (Glenda Jackson) — the story celebrates their love without sentimentality and with an eye to the lessons we can all learn from the Greatest Generation. \nDrama | Comedy \n\n\n\nReel Alternatives is a monthly fundraiser bringing Toronto Film Festival’s critically acclaimed films to the Cowichan Valley. This year’s circuit will feature five acclaimed films. All proceeds go directly to benefiting individuals and families in Cowichan through Cowichan Hospice by ensuring hospice services are available when they need them. \nNote that the concession will be open with snacks and drinks\, along with coffee and tea\, available for purchase.
