SUMMARY:Josephine: A Cabaret Burlesque Dream Play
DESCRIPTION:19+ audiences only. Show contains mild sexual content and partial nudity. \n\n\n\nJosephine\, a burlesque cabaret dream play is an international award-winning and off-Broadway one-woman biographical musical that combines cabaret\, theatre and dance to tell the story of the iconic Josephine Baker\, the first African-American international superstar and one of the most remarkable figures of the 20th Century. \n\n\n\nBorn in St. Louis in 1906\, Josephine Baker achieved only moderate success in the United States\, but became an international superstar after moving to France in the early 20’s. She starred alongside white romantic leading men in films in the 30’s\, had multiple interracial marriages and homosexual relationships\, and performed in men’s clothing before the term “drag” existed in the lexicon. She was also a spy for the French Resistance\, a civil rights activist\, and the mother of 12 adopted children from 4 continents. Her success in France and Europe often gave her the opportunity to live freely without the racial oppression of her home nation\, though she never stopped yearning for acceptance in America. \n\nThis performance will be accompanied with live music from the Pierre Komen Quartet.

SUMMARY:Downchild Blues Band
DESCRIPTION:Cowichan Performing Arts Centre and Gee Dan Productions present \n\nRoaring through bracing\, high-octane performances since 1969\, the band founded and continuously steered by harmonica and guitar ace Donnie “Mr. Downchild” Walsh is as vibrant today as when Dan Aykroyd and the late John Belushi went sniffing around for inspiration for their brilliant Blues Brothers venture back in the 1970s. The pair elevated Downchild’s “Shotgun Blues” and Walsh’s “(I Got Everything I Need) Almost” to smash status on their 1978 Briefcase Full of Blues record. Actually\, the 2017 iteration of Downchild — with each member boasting a minimum of 20 years of service — might be the most electrifying yet. For proof\, simply check out the sextet’s towering\, lid-lifting\, juke-joint–jumping 18th studio album\, Something I’ve Done\, a bona fide group effort and a sonic highlight in a 50-year career spilling over with them. Special guest is 2022 JUNO-nominated singer-songwriter\, Miss Emily.

SUMMARY:Dancers Of Damelahamid: Minowin
DESCRIPTION:Students grades 8–12 $5 \nMînowin illuminates the process of finding direction and explores understandings of organic moments that arise when we connect with one another. These connections breathe new life into our artistic practices and offer critical inquiries with performance spaces. \nThrough integrating narrative\, movement\, song\, performance\, and new multimedia design\, Mînowin connects landscapes and Coastal form line with contemporary perspectives of customary Indigenous dance forms. The Dancers of Damelahamid draw from origin stories and explore ways to translate these perspectives through a contemporary lens. Through multimedia elements\, this production balances the performance space by adding contemporary reflections of Indigenous identity\, immersing audiences in a narrative that illustrates moments of connection\, understanding\, and renewal. \nOpening performance from the Cowichan Tzinquaw Dancers! \n\n\n\nDancers of Damelahamid is an Indigenous dance company founded upon over five decades of extensive work of song and dance revitalization. For countless generations Indigenous dance played an integral part in defining art and culture. In response to the lifting of the Potlatch Ban (1884 – 1951)\, was the resurfacing of dance and the awakening of an art form that was outlawed for almost 70 years. The Dancers of Damelahamid emerged in the 1960s out of an urgency to ensure that these artistic practices were not lost. \nThe Dancers of Damelahamid has since established itself as a leading professional Indigenous dance company. The company’s artistic approaches have contributed to its abilities to bridge creative practices and to work with innovative mediums\, while maintaining commitment to the integrity of their artistic legacy. It is through continual and diligent practice that this dance form endures as non-static and relevant to current innovation\, influence\, and insights.
